Eid ul Ftri or Idul Fitri or Lebaran, is the biggest Muslim celebration in my country. The holiday marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, so you know food plays an important role, perhaps even more so than with other celebrations.
Among the classic Eid ul Ftri dishes in Indonesia, the most famous is KETUPAT, a typical Indonesian rice dish cooked and compressed in diamond-shaped parcels woven from coconut leaves . It has a very bland taste and is normally served with other dishes such as ‘Opor Ayam’ (Chicken in coconut gravy) and ‘Sambel Goreng Ati’ (Beef liver curry).
Ketupat is easy to cook at home but to make the parcels require a bit of skill. The easier way is to just buy the ready-made ketupat parcels and the best place to buy ketupat parcels are at traditional markets.
What if I cannot find ketupat parcels? Should I try to make it myself? but how do I weave a Ketupat?
Just go to Google and voila …..
I found the step by step on how to weave a Ketupat @ http://www.squidoo.com
To cook the rice Ketupat, we just have to boil it in water. It’s simple and easy.
- 500 gr rice
- 12 woven containers
- Wash the rice several times and drain and add some salt. Mix it until well.
- Fill the containers 1/3 full and put them in a saucepan. Fill the pan with water to cover all the ketupat.
- Boil it about 5 hours. Add more water if needed.
- Drain and let them cool off
Cut the rice ketupat and serve with Opor Ayam, Sambal Goreng Ati and other typical Idulfitri dishes
